Don’t think I want to grow these anymore. Simply can’t get it right, and they so seem a bit pointless to be fair. This mess , is this years crop. Roughly in line with last years; with the same level of write offs. My heavy clay really doesn’t like them; so perhaps I need to take the hint. The crop and quality does nothing to sell itself. I would rather just sink more garlic.

Lovely post have you try growing them in pots or bags ? before I just had to pull mty red ones up as they were all soft at the bottom first time of growing them
Shame! If you desperately wanted to try again maybe you could try raised beds?
Have even grown them in pots to no avail
I stopped growing onions and shallots a while back. We don’t eat enough of them to make it a worthwhile crop.
Those are hit and miss for me. Have yet to grow a single red onion.
No I don’t suppose pots would work – too much watering needed maybe.
No idea. They split and form bulbs; just not very big. Garlic is fine though!
