Belated Bruno Sacrifice imminent

All hallow’s eve has come and go. Yet Bruno the Ghost rider pumplkin is still loitering in the kitchen. Whilst squashes such as these do last for sometime, there will soon come a time where the pumpkin might have to meet it’s maker.

In the coming week, I shall try and soup the thing. Not that I am particularly looking forward to chopping it up. Takes a while, since the pumpkin is about 6lbs, with tough leathery skin. The seeds will be saved and hopefully donated to loving homes for the next generation of Bruno Babies.

Have never had two on the same vine before. But here we have it. Two large fruit growing beneath the sprawling mass of leaves. Think these are the ones that were assisted in being pollinated. They are still growing, and rapidly at that.

This Is one of may be two self seed plants that survived the slimers. Can’t say I know what it is though, other than a squash. Think the label said gourd small mix. It’s a rampant, triffid like vine that clearly wants to take the universe. I am training it up rather than out. Remains to be seen how many fruits this actually manages to successfully produce.

Mystery squash: cornells bush dilecta?

Since this is unlabelled, and the only of the home home squashes to grow past slimers. I have no idea what variety this. It’s a tiny green fruit with stripes, as it’s growing very rapidly. There are several vines all growing off in assorted directions. I can only guess that it’s cornells bush dilecta winter squash.

I have had a very little success in keeping home sown seeds alive with the slimers attacking. For the last few weeks, I have been thinking of re-sowing, especially as there has been warm weather. So we are trying yet again with the winter squashes.

Today, I planted out the Atlantic giants so I felt a bit spurred in. These seeds are for the moment sat in the four tier blowaway. I shall leave them there over night, and then transfer then to the Wendy house which is boiling when warm.

Ghost rider 2014

This is this years ghost rider pumpkin. Amongst the dinner plate sized leaves are nestled two small marble sized fruits. Only spotted those yesterday, so we shall see how much success we have with this plant. So far I have only ever got one fruit from a plant.

Woke up early-for a Saturday-with the prime mission being to sink Gladiolus. The box of which, was nearly as big as me, there were certainly a couple of hundred them. Yes, I know that’s a lot, so a few were given away to plot neighbours. Have opted for a mix of colours, but there were some purple ones in there as I specifically wanted these. There were also some giant gladiolus too. It was nice to see that some of the corns sunk last year, are sending up shoots for this year. Last years crop was something of a fluke, so am hoping this year will be just as good.

This took up a great deal of time, though there were moments where I did get slightly bored and had to focus on something else for a few moments. This meant digging up docks that had somewhat pervaded the shallot bed. Pulling out and bashing clumps, whilst trying not to decapitate the purple stemmed shallots that actually looked  a bit on the small side.

The sinking of the gladiolus didn’t take too long, provided that there were these momentary pit stops with other tasks. Even fed the roses today. Have never done this before, usually just leave them to it. However, now that the ones on the plot are fairly established, thought it was worth a shot.

Then I caught side of the tomatoes. Dare I sink these? Well, at home there were the climbing french beans and the squashes. Ma wanted her window sill back, so the squashes have come out. They’ve had a day or two in the sun, not exactly hardened off, but the weather is relatively mild at the moment. This is way earlier than I have ever thrown them out. And once more, not in raised beds. Blue pellets of doom have been scattered, along with experimental cabbage collars to even more preventative. I don’t hold out much hope here.

The climbing french beans had to be sunk. Cobra and blue lake, were sunk with a bulb planter; whilst clinging to their paper pots. The running beans, are somewhat pitiful looking. Enorma, has failed me once again. There are some additional sowings of scarlet emperor somewhere, that will be planted out at some point.

I had to go, before the sun got to my head. Plus I was hungry by two, and had been floating around a very long time.
